Why you should add avocado to your low carb smoothie

  1. They thicken smoothies even better than bananas. Obviously bananas are a no-no on the keto diet but avocados have half the carbs and they make for incredibly thick, creamy smoothies.
  2. Avocados have almost 4 times the fiber of a banana. Hey, maybe that’s why they thicken smoothies so well!
  3. They also have WAY more potassium than a banana. Dude, those bananas are not looking so good compared to avocados.
  4. Healthy fats. Yep, 21g of delicious healthy avocado fat so it’s perfect for the keto diet.
  5. They taste great. No really, they do. And if you’re not an avocado fan, you can easily hide the flavor with some cocoa powder,  nut butter, a few frozen berries, or the extract of your choice.

Avocado Smoothie is the perfect workout snack

Food and fitness.  My two loves; one old, one new. Food has always been a great love of mine. We go way back. Way, way back, to my infancy. Actually, that’s not strictly true, since I was one of the pickiest eaters in existence until I hit about 9 years old. Still, given that I just entered my 40s, that’s a good 31 years, a fairly long time frame for any love affair.

Fitness, on the other hand, is a recently acquired passion. I’ve always loved being active and outdoors but it wasn’t until I started running that I appreciated fitness for fitness’ sake. Feeling my legs grow stronger, my heart and lungs increasing in capacity, my mind clearing with the intensity of the exercise.

That’s incredibly powerful stuff, likely to turn any girl’s head so that she falls hard and fast in love. We’re about ten years into our relationship, fitness and I, and I don’t see us ever breaking up. And now that I’ve added CrossFit to the mix, I love seeing my strength increase and my muscles really become defined.

And thankfully, these two loves go well together. They get along and they even help each other out. With more fitness, I can enjoy more food. With better, healthier food, I can enjoy more fitness. What a team.

And this avocado smoothie is packed with healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants. It really is the ideal snack to fuel you through or to recover from a tough workout.

Updated Avocado Smoothie Recipe

The original recipe was a little higher carb than this one. I decided to switch things up when I added this recipe to my cookbook Easy Keto Breakfasts.

I ditched the Greek yogurt in favor of heavy cream, and added collagen peptides instead of whey protein. But I kept the flavor profile exactly the same. The carbs dropped from 9g to only 4.5g!

So good and so easy. I know many people may be a bit freaked out by a green smoothie such as this. But trust me, it works. Matcha green tea is well known for its health properties and it’s got a lovely unique flavor. You really won’t taste the avocado at all.

Feel free to add any other nutritional boosters you might like, such as MCT Oil.
